26th April 1916

"Rifle inspection and our own aeroplanes brought in the information that the Turkish had retreated back again to their old position. All that was left of the Warwickshire (Yeomanry) was 47 men. It is reported that the rest got killed. Our aeroplanes brought in information that the Turkish had taken no prisoners. There was very heavy firing on the Salt Lake down the Canal and the other two (Yeomanry) regiments, they can't account for them.

Between four and five o'clock in the afternoon a big troop ship filled with Russian soldiers came up the Suez, they were making their way for France."
