"They started a bombardment in the morning and did not stop until night. We lost rather heavy that day, we had thirty killed and about the same wounded. The Turks said they were going to blow us into the sea if we did not go of it ourself.
On the 28th December still bombarded the British lines but no damage. We came down from the trenches, and on the 29th we left for the boat to take us off the peninsula. It was the 30th before we left Gallipoli shores; we were going to Lemnos Island that is the base for the British Mediterranean Expeditionary Force."
