13th February 1916

"We left Port Said to proceed to the line of redoubts, trenches on the Assyrian Desert. Left Port Said at 8am and boarded a paddle steamer which took us up the Suez Canal for about 2 or 3 miles, we then got off the Lighter and proceeded on foot to our Post. On the way we past a big salt-work and salt lakes. It is from these lakes that they get the salt from"

Peter mentions the Assyrian Desert, he is alluding to an area that must have been part of the Assyrian Empire which at one point controlled most of the Middle East, including Egypt.
