Sorry for the Turks, 17th October 1915

"We shell the Turkish lines with our artilliary and the monitors. My word it is just a pure hell when they start on the sea. I am sorry for the Turks when they start shelling from the sea."

Monitors were a class of ship with relatively poor seaworthiness, but comparatively large guns. They were designed for supporting troops ashore.
